FAQs

    What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of focused consciousness. Your hypnotherapist will assist you in learning how to achieve this state by guiding you into it.

Once this has been achieved, you will then receive what are called hypnotic suggestions. These suggestions will enable you to use the power of hypnosis in your life and make the changes you desire.

Hypnosis is a tool that can help you just, like it has helped millions of other people to take back control of their lives.

Hypnosis can help you change old habits and to provide you with motivation to do the things that you may have been putting off.

Hypnosis has been sanctioned and used by the medical community since 1958 to help patients overcome chronic pain, create anesthesia, and heal psychogenic illnesses.

Hypnosis has also been shown to help mothers give birth to their children with little or no pain.

At the Phoenix Centre in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, the use of Hypnosis and self-hypnosis have been shown to be effective in reducing stress and stress-related illnesses.

    Is hypnosis safe?
Hypnosis is safe. It is very similar to experiencing a daydream. Usually you will feel relaxed when doing hypnosis.

Hypnosis in and of itself is a very pleasant experience. It is a time to let go of the other thoughts of the day and focus on the issues you came in to work on.

Scientist, medical professionals, psychologists and hypnotherapists have been using hypnosis for over 200 years and no one has ever been hurt by simply going into hypnosis.

At the Phoenix Centre, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, we use Hypnosis to apply the therapy you need with compassion and care in a very safe environment.

    What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is also used to help you reach goals when nothing else has helped. Browse around the Phoenix Centre Web Site to see a list of uses for hypnotherapy we offer in Melbourne, Victoria Australia

Self-hypnosis may also be part of a good hypnotherapy program. Ask your hypnotherapist if using self-hypnosis is recommended to help you reach your goals.

    Can I be hypnotized?
Of course you can! You already have been. It's easy to go into hypnosis and it is a normal state of mind that everyone has already experienced.

In fact, hypnosis is such a normal state of mind, most people usually don’t even realize that they are hypnotized.

Normal, everyday hypnosis occurs when you are driving down the road and lose track of time, or, when you are focusing on a book or television program and you don’t even notice something that is going on around you.

When you come in for hypnosis, all you need to do is to be able to follow the instructions of the hypnotherapist and you can put the power of hypnosis to work for you.

At The Phoenix Centre Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, experience has shown that anyone of at least normal intelligence and the willingness to follow instructions can experience hypnosis and use it to improve his or her life. This includes children and teenagers.

They have tried every other avenue that they can think of without success. At the Phoenix Centre in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, we use hypnosis, hypnotherapy and teach self-hypnosis so that people like you can succeed in making important changes.

How To Get The Most Out of Your First Hypnotherapy Session
What can you do to make sure you get the most from you first hypnotherapy session? This is a very good question, because it is an important one for those seeking hypnosis or hypnotherapy services. An entire book or at least a chapter could be written on this topic. In this discussion I will narrow it down to two main factors explained in detail in points 11 and 12 that contribute to you getting the most out of your first hypnosis session.
    Back

The Hypnotherapist Should Help You To Feel Comfortable About Doing Hypnosis By Telling You All You Need To Know About Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy.
The first important factor determining your success is your choice of hypnotherapist or hypnotherapy provider in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Providing you have made a good choice and your hypnotherapist is well trained (i.e., A Certified Hypnotherapist), she will know how to help you to be prepared for your first session by providing you a sufficient amount of information about hypnosis, hypnotherapy, her experience and credentials, as well as what to expect during the session, basically everything that you need to find out to put you at ease. For most people receiving this kind of information is and important part of the process, because any experienced hypnotherapist can tell you, proper preparation of clients prior to the hypnosis session improves success. It improves success because preparing a client for the session helps to reduce concerns about the hypnosis process and set up an appropriate expectation of what to expect the hypnotic experience to feel like. Any fear of being hypnotized will always reduce the probability of success of any hypnosis session. An individual who has a realistic expectation of what the experience of being hypnotized will be like, will feel more comfortable and satisfied with the experience, during and after the session.
    Back

What You Can Do To Get The Most Out Of A Hypnotherpay Session
The next main factor that will contribute to the success in your first hypnotherapy session of course is you, and how you mentally approach the session. Presuming that your hypnotherapist has done her/his job well as discussed above, and you have asked all the questions you feel you need to ask, you should feel comfortable with experiencing hypnosis.
Here is what you need to do, you need to adopt an easy going accepting attitude for following instructions.

Almost all hypnotic inductions contain some suggestions for relaxation. Even the instant and rapid inductions have some kind of suggestion for relaxation. However, contrary to popular opinion, physical relaxation is not required for hypnosis to occur. It has become my opinion, after conducting thousands of hypnosis sessions, as well as supervising and training hypnotherapists who have conducted thousands more, that the physical relaxation is only encouraged (through suggestion) so that a kind of mental relaxation can occur. This mental relaxation is a major part of what helps you to experience the benefits of hypnosis. This mental relaxation is sometimes called "contention." This "contention" does not have anything to do with conflict or tension. In fact it is quite the opposite. This "contention" is a mental state where, it is as if the person in hypnosis is hanging on the hypnotist’s every word. In the Dave Elman-type inductions, there comes a point where the client is asked to relax her "mind until the numbers fade away." When the numbers have faded away, as a result of relaxing the mind, we have guided our clients into this highly relaxed state of mind, and as a result, they can become highly suggestible, and be able to experience virtually every kind of hypnotic phenomena, from catalepsy to hypnotically induced anesthesia.

The hypnotherapist cannot relax your mind. She is in the role of a coach or teacher. The hypnotic induction is a way of helping you to first (generally), relax your body, and then use that relaxation as a model for relaxing your mind and creating the hypnotic state. When you follow the instructions of the hypnotherapist, your conscious mind become less critical of the instructions and suggestions given. Once this has been accomplished your hypnotherapist can help you become successful for whatever you came in to see a hypnotherapist for. So, it is essential that you do not, over analyze the instructions. Analysis and mental criticism is the opposite of the mental relaxation you want to create. Just as muscle tension is the opposite of physical relaxation, mental work such as rationalization and analysis is the opposite of mental relaxation.

Now we return to the idea of adopting an easy-going accepting mental attitude. Analysis and criticism is equivalent to mental work. If you are doing mental work, you are not relaxing the mind and not relaxing the mind will inhibit you going as deeply into hypnosis as you could otherwise. The deeper you allow yourself to go into hypnosis, the more benefit you will receive from each hypnosis session.

How I Helped To Make My First Hypnotherapy Session Successful
Let me give you and example. Even though I learned hypnotherapy many years ago, it was only about 2 years ago when I decided that it would be beneficial for me to have the experience of being hypnotized by someone else. Up to that point, I was always the hypnotherapist; I had never been the "client." So, I contacted a hypnotherapist in Melbourne that I did know personally (I thought that would put me more at ease), and arranged a Hypnotherapy session to work on something that was important to me at the time.

As I sat waiting for my meeting with the hypnotherapist, some anxiety (fear) started to set in. I was not afraid of hypnosis. I was not afraid of the hypnotherapist; she came to me highly recommended by someone that I highly trusted. I was afraid that I would mess the whole thing up! I was afraid that I would be too analytical and be too focused on how she was conducting the session to allow the process of mental relaxation to occur. I was concerned that I would not allow contention; that I would not be able to put aside my analytical rational thinking long enough to experience what I hoped to experience.

It was then that I sat down and had a little talk with myself. It went something like this… "Okay, do you really want to do this or not? This is going to cost $100.00/hour. Don’t go a head with this unless you are willing to follow instructions. Only you can get in the way of having some success here. So, what are you going to do? I know you are a trained scientist. I know you are a little stubborn. I know you like to be in charge and in control, but you can’t do that right now, that is not how it works. It is going to cost you $100.00 no matter how it goes."

Then it happened. I decided, that I was going to be the best hypnotic subject that this hypnotherapist had ever seen! It was just a decision. But it was just the decision that I needed to make.

I had just decided that I was going to give her a chance to do her work. I was going to allow her to be in charge for a little while. I was going to follow her instructions and just adopt an easy-going accepting attitude for what ever she suggested. And, when I wasn’t sure of what to do or of what she was doing, I was going to relax entirely and give her the benefit of the doubt!

Was I doing this for her sake? No. How well I did in the hypnosis session was going to have very little effect on her life (she was going to make $100.00/hour regardless). I was there because there was something that I wanted to accomplish, and the only way I was going to be able to accomplish that was to follow her instructions and to adopt that easy-going accepting mental attitude.

And, that is just what I did. I had a great hypnosis session; which included a hypnotic age regression to when I was so small I hadn’t even walked yet! It was a profound experience and an important part of my education as a hypnotherapist.

So, what can you do to make the most of your upcoming hypnotherapy session? Sit down and have a little talk with yourself, and then decide to adopt that easy-going accepting mental attitude, and to follow all of the instructions of your hypnotherapist without rationalizing or analyzing, really let your mind relax like your body can relax, and you will have done your part! Then you will get the very most out of your hypnosis session. That is my advice.

    What is 7th-PATH Self-Hypnosis®?
...is a holistic, Mind-Body-Spirit approach to self-hypnosis for self-improvement. Learn self-hypnosis through individual private session, classes or CDs. 7th Path Self-Hypnosis System is effective for stress management, motivation, self-esteem, habits, relationship problems and more.

Combining the transformational power of hypnosis, meditation and your spiritual system moves you more quickly toward being your true self, reaching a much higher level of consciousness, releasing your latent talents, and helping you to realize your calling. Yes, this hypnosis-empowered meditation will work when other kinds of meditation were to difficult. It is so simple when you use a system that works with how your mind was designed to work. Take back control of your life and live the life you were meant to live.

It is the first self-hypnosis program that we know of that allows you to first remove the old programming that blocks success.

There is an old saying that goes something like "you must first empty the cup before you can put anything new in it." One of the problems with other forms of self hypnosis is that the hypnotic suggestions that you give yourself must go up against years of old programming. The old programming does not want to go, and the new suggestions are rejected time and time again before, through many repetitions, the new suggestions are finally accepted (or maybe not even then).

Removing the old programming first helps to avoid this and tends to make the new suggestions more powerful. In addition, sometimes, when you remove the old programming you just start to feel better and even without additional hypnotic suggestions. Many practitioners will begin to achieve their goals, especially if they have to do with health, automatically. It seems that once the old programming that got in your way of being successful is gone, your own natural programs for health just seem to start working better than they ever did before. As a result, you just tend to start taking better care of yourself, and old patterns such as addiction begin to fade away (I.e., smoking, overeating, alcohol abuse, etc.).

Using old fashioned self-hypnosis is like planting a new flower garden in an area that is full of weeds. The new flowers wouldn’t have a chance because the old weeds have a head start. They would choke off almost any chance that the new flowers had to take root and grow strong. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it that way. You need to remove the weeds (and the root) so that the good plants and flowers (new useful thoughts, beliefs, feelings and behaviours, etc.) can survive and grow.

It is especially designed to utilize an individual’s own belief system.

If you are a spiritual person, those beliefs can be a very important part of your changes. Especially when the changes that you want to make will make you a better or healthier person. If you are not really all that spiritual in your belief systems, that is okay too. You can benefit from the 7th Path system by simply using making a few adjustments, which you will be shown how to do.
This is an especially easy approach to using self-hypnosis.

It’s easier than learning ordinary self-hypnosis from a book because when you try to learn it from a book, you always wonder if you are really doing it right. The way it works is that a 7th Path trained Hypnotherapist teaches you the techniques, including how to go into hypnosis, while you are in hypnosis! Then when you first emerge from hypnosis, you immediately use the technique to take yourself back into hypnosis. This is the easiest time to go into hypnosis. Results are almost automatic! The Hypnotherapist is there to make sure you are doing it right and to answer any questions that you might have, right then and there.

What is Past Life Regression ?
Past life regression (PLR) is a process of retrieving memories of previous lives. This process is facilitated through the state of hypnosis; By reliving or discovering previous experiences or traumas, a person can identify the origin of his/her problem whether it is a phobia or a disability or other issues. Advocates of past life regression believe in reincarnation and claim that the experiences from previous lives can carry over and affect a person’s current life. Past Life Regression is commonly used by Hypnotherapists.
    Back

What is Past Life Regression Therapy ?
Past Life/ Past Lives Therapy (PLT) utilizing clinical hypnotherapy allows unconscious experiences from past life traumas or emotionally charged events to become fully conscious. Past Life Therapy aims to resolve any unconscious, survival-based scripts that could be negatively affecting one’s present health, behaviors, or quality of life. PLT can allow for a more thorough resolution since it gives the mind permission to locate past life sources affecting present day challenges or obstacles. PLT can uncover patterns and unconscious dialogue from many lifetimes of trauma or confusion associated with an event; individuals often re-create similar experiences unconsciously as an attempt to complete or heal an unresolved past life experience. Past Life Regression Therapy primarily utilizes a series of methods to access source material transferred at each incarnation as cellular/ soul memory. PLT broadens a client’s awareness and enables them to reframe any unconscious logic which no longer serves their current life experience and well-being.

In general - before 34 weeks, the sooner you start - the sooner you'll experience the benefits. If you are 35+ weeks please contact me for more information. You will learn a new technique over 5 weeks (or sooner if you are very motivated)

    Back

Do I need a partner to use the GentleBirth Program?
No. We understand that not every birth partner will want to participate so GentleBirth can be learned alone or with a partner.

I'm Planning on Having an Epidural - Will GentleBirth be any benefit to me?
Absolutely! You'll still feel the benefits of GentleBirth during your pregnancy as your confidence increases and you enjoy longer periods of uninterrupted sleep at night. GentleBirth will also help you stay calm and connected while you're at home in the early stages of labour, keeping those pain hormones at bay. Also in today’s busy hospitals it can take some time to get your epidural (if it’s available) and there is a small percentage of women for whom the epidural may not work completely.
    Back

Do I Need to Take a Hospital Antenatal Class besides Gentlebirth ?
No. GentleBirth is a complete antenatal class and includes comprehensive information on your childbirth options and strategies for effective decision making. If you are planning on breastfeeding we recommend you attend a breastfeeding class and join a breastfeeding support group. You will also receive continuous support which is just a phone call away.
    Back

When applying Gentle Birth, Will I Be in a Trance or Disconnected from My Labour?
No. Self hypnosis helps you reach a deep level of relaxation during your labour, just like being deeply relaxed on the couch at home. You will hear everything going on around you and respond to conversations if you choose to. Some mums will chat between contractions like they are not even in labour. GentleBirth helps you feel much more connected to your body and your baby
    Back

I'm Taking Antenatal Yoga - can I learn GentleBirth too?
Great! Antenatal yoga is a great way to gently exercise and relax during your pregnancy. Yoga has an important focus on breathing which will definitely help during labour. GentleBirth takes that focus to a much deeper level with the subconscious mind, so the relaxation becomes an automatic response - you never have to remember positions - you just follow your body’s lead. The mums I teach privately who have been practicing yoga for years tell me GentleBirth is like yoga x 10 !

    What is Stress
Stress is defined as an individual's response to a threatening situation (FIGHT OR FLIGHT) whether real or imagined. Contrary to what many believe, Stress is good ! In prehistoric times, the physical changes in response to stress were an essential adaptation for meeting natural threats.
    Back

How can Stress affect me ?
Even in the modern world, the stress response can be an asset for raising levels of performance during critical events such as a sports activity, an important meeting, or in situations of actual danger or crisis:

    * Breathing becomes rapid and the lungs take in more oxygen. Blood flow may actually increase 300% to 400%, priming the muscles, lungs, and brain for added demands. The spleen discharges red and white blood cells, allowing the blood to transport more oxygen.

    * The steroid hormones dampen parts of the immune system, so that infection fighters (including important white blood cells) or other immune molecules can be redistributed. These immune-boosting troops are sent to the body's front lines where injury or infection is most likely, such as the skin, the bone marrow, and the lymph nodes.

    * Fluids are diverted from nonessential locations, including the mouth (this causes dryness and difficulty in talking).

    * The Heart diverts blood flow away from the skin to support the heart and muscle tissues. (This also reduces blood loss in the event of accident). The physical effect is a cool, clammy, sweaty skin.

    * The scalp also tightens so that the hair seems to stand up.

    * The digestive activity shuts down (a nonessential body function during short-term periods of physical exertion or crisis).

Once the threat has passed and the effect has not been harmful, the stress hormones return to normal. This is known as the relaxation response. In turn, the body's systems also normalize.

STRESS is harmful when it becomes persistent or chronic. When we skip the 'relaxation response', all parts of the body's stress apparatus (the brain, heart, lungs, vessels, and muscles) become chronically over- or under-activated.

This may produce, over time, serious damages:

Physical: such as but not limited to: heart disease, stroke, immune deficiency, cancer, diabetes, abdominal disorders, muscular and joint pains, headaches and migraines, sexual and reproductive dysfunctions, memory, concentration and learning, fatigue, constipation/diarrhoea, allergies, skin and mouth disorders, sudden hair loss...

    Or

Psychological: such as but not limited to: anxieties, depression, substance abuse, aggression, relationship problems, anger/guilt).

Often people succeed in relieving stress for the short-term but resort to previous ways of stressful thinking and behaving because of outside pressure or entrenched beliefs or habits. One major obstacle to reducing stress is the strong biologic urge for fight or flight itself. The very idea of relaxation can feel threatening, because it is perceived as letting down one's guard. For example, an over-demanding boss may put a subordinate into a psychological state of fighting-readiness, even though there is no safe opportunity for the subordinate to fight back, or even express anger. Stress builds up, but the worker has the illusion, even subconsciously, that the stress itself is providing safety or preparedness, so does nothing to correct the condition. Many people are afraid of being perceived as selfish if they engage in stress-reducing activities that benefit only themselves. The truth is that self-sacrifice may be inappropriate and even damaging if the person making the sacrifice is unhappy, angry, or physically unwell. Many people believe that certain emotional responses to stress, such as anger, are innate and unchangeable features of personality. Research has shown, however, that with therapy, individuals can be taught to change their emotional reactions to stressful events.

It is essential to remember that reducing stress and staying relaxed clears the mind so it can initiate appropriate actions to get rid of the stress-ridden conditions.

    Back

How can I reduce Stress levels ?
WHAT ARE SOME SPECIFIC STRESS REDUCTION METHODS?

You have certainly heard about them before:

    Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy (Relaxation techniques)
    Healthy Diet and Exercise
Avoidance of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
Identifying and questioning the sources of stress
    Restructuring One's priorities
Discussing and expressing One's feelings openly and peacefully.
Learning to listen, empathize, and respond to others with understanding.
    Focus on positive outcomes
Keep your sense of humour up high.
Reduce stress on the work place.
Before choosing specific strategies for treating stress, several factors should be considered:

No single method is uniformly successful
What works for one person does not necessarily work for someone else
Stress can be positive as well as negative. Appropriate and controllable stress provides interest and excitement and motivates the individual to greater achievement, while a lack of stress may lead to boredom and depression.

The philosophy followed, at The Phoenix Centre, is that a combination of approaches are generally most effective.
Our Stress Reduction Program is tailor made and individualized to each person or group
